Specialized Agencies
At METMUN 2024 a Specialized Agency Committee consists of approximately 15 to 30 positions. It is the goal of both Specialized Agency committees to debate, vote upon, and pass a resolution to either one or both of the topics presented in the background guide. As opposed to GAs, SAs at METMUN have crisis scenarios embedded within them. These committees are recommended for seasoned delegates with a decent level of Model UN experience looking to sharpen up not only their debate skills, but also their negotiation skills and knowledge of the subject matter at hand.
OPEC: 1970's Oil Crisis
Description:
Set against the backdrop of the 1973 oil crisis, this committee brings delegates into one of the most volatile economic periods of the 20th century. Following the Yom Kippur War, oil-exporting nations implemented an embargo that led to unprecedented shortages, skyrocketing prices, and an immediate strain on the economies of oil-dependent nations. Delegates will represent nations and organizations impacted by this crisis, discussing measures to maintain energy security, prevent economic collapse, and explore alternative energy sources to reduce dependency on oil. They’ll also delve into the political and diplomatic implications of OPEC’s influence and negotiate alliances to stabilize their energy futures. This committee provides a unique opportunity to explore how nations balance resource scarcity with diplomacy, managing the ripple effects of one of the most impactful energy disruptions in history.

Canadian House of Commons - Parliamentary Simulation
Description:
Modeled after Canada’s real-life legislative process, this committee places delegates in the shoes of Canadian Members of Parliament, tasked with debating and voting on national issues. Participants will explore how Canada’s bicameral parliamentary system functions, including the unique dynamics between governing and opposition parties and the role of the Governor General as the Monarch’s representative in signing bills into law. Delegates will examine how party standings affect legislative outcomes, navigate coalition-building in cases of minority governments, and learn how to manage both governmental and private members’ bills. Central to their discussions will be the process of budget approval, as delegates debate national spending priorities, taxation policies, and Canada’s economic direction. This committee offers an in-depth simulation of Canadian democracy, requiring delegates to balance national interests with the concerns of their represented constituencies, making decisions that could impact Canada’s future on both domestic and international stages

United Nations Security Council on Apartheid South Africa (UNSC 1985)
Description:
The year is 1985, and the apartheid regime in South Africa is under international scrutiny for its oppressive racial policies. This UNSC committee will simulate the geopolitical complexities of apartheid-era South Africa, challenging delegates to balance national policies, international law, and human rights. Members will debate various strategies, from economic sanctions and arms embargoes to diplomatic isolation, aimed at pressuring the South African government to end apartheid. They’ll also evaluate support measures for anti-apartheid movements, recognizing the risks and sacrifices involved. Delegates must navigate the influence of Cold War politics, with powers like the US and the Soviet Union vying for dominance, shaping the global response to apartheid. Through crisis updates and unforeseen developments, delegates will find themselves rethinking strategies in this high-stakes simulation, balancing immediate actions with long-term solutions for equality and peace
